Narrative introduction

    Jonathan is Director of the Brethren Academy for Ministerial Leadership until June 30, 2008 at which time he will begin serving full time as executive director of Congregational Life Ministries for the Church of the Brethren General Board, Elgin, IL. Shively is a leader, teacher, clinician, student, worship leader, musician, and reflective participant in the life and ministry of Christ's church. He is married to Kim and together they are relying heavily on God's grace in parenting three elementary-aged children, Ben, Noah and Lydia.  Jonathan enjoys volleyball, golf, bike riding, remodeling his old house, and playing music with his kids. The Shivelys currently live in Richmond, IN and are members and active participants in the Richmond Church of the Brethren.

    The Brethren Academy for Ministerial Leadership is a ministry training partnership of Bethany Theological Seminary and the Church of the Brethren General Board.

Academic interests and pursuit

  • Ministerial Leadership Development: A ministerial leader is an individual with the personhood and skills to mobilize people into God's mission. Using a variety of theological, biblical, and organizational rubrics, leaders are formed and leadership is empowered.
  • Worldviews: Creative dialog focusing on the interplay of the pre-modern, modern, and post-modern worldviews.
  • Diversity: Exploring aspects of diversity as crucial to imaginative and constructive conversation and faithful discipleship.
  • Cultivating a Congregation's Worship Voice: Exploring worship as that which arises in the convergence of personal, congregational, cultural, and missional giftedness. Understanding worship from perspectives which move beyond stylistic preference.
  • Worship Leading: Helping people exercise the practice of stewarding others in the presence of God.
  • Worship Leader: Drawing on a range of musical genres and relying heavily on the gifts of the Holy Spirit and gathered worshiping community, Jonathan himself leads worship through music.
  • Missional/Emergent Church:Seeks to cultivate and discover new ways of exercising practice of faith in cooperation with God's ongoing work in the world.
  • Planting and Growth:Provides leadership for movements of church growth and systems of church planting.
